JUGUETERIA FANTÁSTICA

This project explores the land of ephemeral architecture, and has been executed by our team, under the direction of Susana Herrera for the children’s ballet of the Academy of Ballet of the renowned Maestra Juanita Toro. The ballet’s repertoire is inspired by the play “La Juguetería Fantástica, La boutique fantastique”. This ballet tells a fantastic story, beautifully choreographed, that mobilizes the magical and playful world of children. Immerse the viewer in those magical and imaginary worlds where toys take on a life of their own and transform into fantastic characters that move us and fill us with wonder.

Dolls, puppets, and all kinds of toys overflow out of seven light and giant box structures made of wood (250cm x120cm). When night falls with the sound of music they slowly begin to take on a life of their own. The combination of lights, floating dolls and a central clock, create this colorful scenography, where the space must be able to express itself and tell a story in a very short period.

We use iconic illustrations from different eras and illustrators, as well as historical dolls of the past, digitally and analogously altered to build a particular scene in each box. Each box and its contents had to accompany the choreography of the girls’ ballet and captivate the audience submerging it in another space and time. An exercise that explored the dimension and relationship between body and space through the movement of dancers and their relative scale.
